Rev. Dyan Abena McCray, the lesbian pastor of Unity Fellowship Church in Northwest D.C., led a church concert and fundraiser Feb. 20 to benefit victims of the Haiti earthquake. The event drew about 60 people and raised $7,532, including a $2,500 donation from members of Faith Temple Church, McCray said.

Earthquake survivor Elmide Meleance, a U.S. citizen who was in Port-au-Prince during the earthquake, spoke about the political and cultural history of Haiti.

The video features photographs and audio from the event, including a drumming prelude from Unity Fellowship Church’s Umoja Dono Drum Orchestra, followed by Katherine Westerene singing “Were You There?” a spiritual rewritten to include new lyrics reflecting the tragedy of the Haitian earthquake.
