There is no gay community, if indeed there ever was one. At least as far as the men are concerned (please note the qualification), the idea of community has been destroyed by the idea of salvation through property, income, sycophancy, and snobbery.

From time immemorial, gay men have achieved a measure of visibility and protection only by worshiping, aping, and serving the rich and powerful. Hence the parody of aristocracy--the kiss-my-hand gestures, the affected accents, the obsession with status symbols, the dictatorial petulance--that has traditionally been held in such high esteem among the gay.

This is the situation to which we are now rapidly returning, with one significant difference. As society's thin layer of lawyers, bankers, MBAs, and other destructive parasites concentrates in urban enclaves like Logan Circle they "come out" as a proudly self-proclaimed elite group, united in their contempt for everything that they consider beneath them (which is very nearly everything).

Their leaders in this parody of a liberation movement are the openly gay members of the parasitic classes, whose visibility--which really betokens the failure of gay community--is mistaken by the shallow for a sign of its success.

All Yuppies now are culturally gay, and the "gay community" now consists exclusively of gay Yuppies.

A "gay community" that joins this repulsive dance has purchased its own destruction, which is, of course, precisely what we are observing now.

Peter-

Part of the whole purpose of a "community center" is to have a space where folks who are questioning or just coming out can drop by in a nonjudgmental environment to be around other GLBT people, especially during the day. Think of the kids who are rejected by their families or closeted adults who want to find out more information (yes, you can search the web, but that's not the same as having someone to actually talk to).

Most importantly, a central place to keep files, records, and resources is crucial to a nonprofit group, and I know this firsthand, being on the Boards of two different GLBT nonprofits, neither of which has its own office. Board members all have their own "private caches" of files and materials, and when you need something, you have to track down the person who has it (who may have left the Board or even moved away), and there is nowhere to store marketing materials (such as used at Pride, etc), so again, nobody is ever sure who has what, and it's very inefficient. A central place to store materials is crucial for an organization serving a large community.

Do they really need a physical space? What about doing a "virtual" community center and then hold events at different venues around town? I checked out the dc center website and it is pretty good--just expand on that-- why have a building in the 21st century?
