Straight ally Kris Valderrama is running for re-election in the 26th District. As a Filipina American, she's always been strongly supported by the Filipino American community, but it's her support of marriage equality and the LGBT community that has led her to face a much tougher road back to Annapolis. Equality Maryland has stepped forward to back her and is doing some great coalition work with the Filipino American community. Best of luck to all the candidates that are walking the walk on our behalf- straight or queer.

Political power is what it is all about. And the more gay / trans people we have in the govt, the more other people in government will know them, and almost certainly respect them.

And that is what will lead to legal gains. its hard to listen to the voices of intolerance against people you know, work with, and respect.

Its all about being 'out", which IMHO is the real Job 1 for the gay community.

Although the election of openly lgbt candidates is welcome progress in the ability of all citizens to have a seat at the legislative table -- it only translates to progress for the lgbt community if these candidates are also willing to be advocates for lgbt equality. Among all the 9 candidates for the state legislature - only Rich Madaleno and Mary Washington mention marriage and transgender equality among their important issues on their websites.
