Obama had the balls to fire Gen McChrystal for reasons unrelated to DADT. Just about overnight. He could also tell the mil to end enforcing DADt,, not appeal the court ruling, which I think means that it could not be appealed by others to a highter court. And we could easly do with out 5 or 20 generals out of the 4300 we have in the active mil. Deliver a message - sign on to ending dadt now, or get out - you have one week to resign, or face dismissal with loss of all pensions and benefits. Kick them in the nuts.

And another group the chaplains - I hear that the chaplains are infested with anything but Christian officers. Make them sign a statement that the accept and will help the troops to understand that there is no place in the mil for homophobes. Don't like it - go to the unemployment line.

And btw - I saw a commnet that we have a couple of senators - both dems, whose term will end early, eg maybe with the election. They were appointed to fill the terms of the late sen from W. Va (forget his name), and someone else.

So in the Lame duck session, we could be even worse off, assuming that 1 (expected) or 2 (possible) seats go to the repubs.

I would truly like to see every gay soldier come out. Inside info is that its not 50,000 or 60000, but more like 100,000 soldiers who are gay. They join the mil not only to serve their country (despite those that despise them), but its a job, and for some, the mil is the only family they have had since they came out and discovered what the oxymoron "christian love" is all about.

If we lost 100,000 soldiers, our efforts in Afghanistan would collapse. Put Obama and the congress in a bind - gays are here , there, and everywhere in the mil. And proud. And dare the mil to throw them all out

The Homophobic Hate States of America do not deserve their service if DADT is not repealed

Thanks for presenting some of the explanations for appealing this law rather than letting it become dormant, but not dead, with this court order. Only congress can repeal it, and only the Supremes can prevent a future administration from reviving it from the district court. I believe it is the worst of the anti-gay laws because it requires punishment simply for being gay, and therefore harms us all, and must be repealed. And it would be on the way out if we could get just one republican senator to vote for ending it.

Just as anyone taking the time to look at the question of racism in the U S today will come to the conclusion that we are not a post racial society by any means. We have taken some major steps toward eliminating racism but we are not there yet. The same is true about anti gay sentiments. On many issues it is a minority who harbor anti gay sentiments, on a few issues the nation is close to being evenly divided. On the question of gays serving openly in the military, a majority of the nation supports that position with the numbers being close to thinking the nation would pass a constitutional amendment to ensure that, but a very determined minority is set to obstruct that in any way they can.

If Congress passed a law that the president considered unconstitutional and he vetoed it and then Congress passed it over his veto would these people supporting his position on DADT still think he had to defend an unconstitutional law. Say Congress passes a law that prohibits women from serving in the Senate. It's obviously unconstitutional, I think it's unlikely that any court would uphold it. Yet it gets passed over a presidential veto. Will these same people urging the president to defend DADT now, have the same opinion?

I hope this puts to rest the silly idea that Obama cares about anyone other than himself. All the celebrating turned to ashes when his administration stepped squarely in to block implementation of the ruling to eliminate DADT. When are we going to stop being Dem zombies and accept whatever crumbs they send our way?
