I recently discovered the story of a decorated veteran and forgotten gay American hero. His name is Oliver W. Sipple and on September 22, 1975, he bravely saved the life of President Gerald R. Ford in San Francisco when he grabbed the hand of Sarah Jane Moore as she attempted to assassinate the president.

Oliver W. Sipple epitomized service in the eyes of many. However, simply because he was gay, his own parents and hometown of Detroit Michigan rejected this hero and disabled Vietnam veteran. Thirty-five years has come and gone and it is high time America honors this gay hero in a special and meaningful way.

We have a custom where we have placed the name of a prominent figure on a piece of newly enacted legislation when warranted. This is to honor or recognize certain individuals, whether living or dead, who have influenced our lives for the purpose of betterment.

Yes there are others who deserve consideration. However, the treatment of Sipple, after he saved the life of the president is a statement that needs an exclamation point on rediculous. And naming the DADT repeal legislation after Sipple says we Americans no longer reject a hero simply because he is gay.

I support honoring this forgotten gay American hero and Marine Oliver W. Sipple by placing his name on the repeal of DADT or any legislation whereby current and future gay soldiers can serve openly we will be making progress. I also believe this will help sway reluctant members to understand how counter-productive it is to deny homosexuals to serve our country in the military.

Time wouldn't be running out for Don't Ask Don't Tell and all of the other Pro-LGBT bills if Obama and the Democratic leadership had taken action over the past two years. The truth is they kept putting off our bills and now they will probably let them all die and hand the House over to the damn Republicans. At this point, there are only two pieces of Pro-LGBT legislation that can still be passed by the current Congress in lame-duck session, and that is the Repeal of DADT in the Senate and the passage of the Domestic Partnership Benefits & Obligations Act, (H.R.2517 / S.1102) in the House & Senate. DPBO has already passed out of committees in the House & Senate and is just waiting for Pelosi, Hoyer and Reid to call it up for a floor vote so it can get passed. The senate is acting like it will let DADT die without another vote, and both the House & Senate have failed to give DPBO a vote since it passed out of committee more than ten months ago. If the Dems don't give us a vote on these bills, my partner and I will leave them hanging in 2012 and this goes for our "Fierce Advocate" Obama too.
