David Catania has done a good job as Chair of the Council's Healt Committee and I know that many people want him to continue with that committee. His depth of understanding of the issues in that area make him invaluable when it comes to both oversight and advocacy.

I think that what every non-profit in the District that gets funding from the City must do immediately is decide how they can either get along with less money or how they can make up any cuts that will surely come in the next budget cycle from other sources.

The District, like every other local jurisdiction will have to cut spending and potentially also raise taxes in the next budget cycle. But the people who will be hit with the higher tax bills will expect the City to look at budget cuts first. I never mind paying higher taxes but there are clearly cost savings that can be made in the District's budget first.

I expect that Jim Graham, Tommy Wells and other Councilmembers will get to work immediately as they do oversight of their agencies to find the potential savings. Now is the time to do that, not wait for the budget to arrive.
