PUHLEEZE! This reads as if the White House & Gates had nothing to do with the "compromise" bill, contradicted entirely by the report below, AND leaves out entirely that what it left on the floor was the five-year old bill [that Obama had promised to personally fight for] which not only contained a mandate that all discharges unequivocally end within six months but also would have created a federal law banning any kind of discrimination against gays while IN the military. More than a week after the siging—despite the fact that their own "study" documented that the majority of troops would be fine NOW with open service—Gates refuses to say when discharges will end [he's said in the past it will take "at least a year"], is talking about a "phased in" change—the exact opposite of what the RAND study said was necessary for success, and the "study"—after its authors indefensibly met with SEVEN antigay groups—would create a kind of gay variation on the "Jim Crow Army," in which gays can serve but have no guarantees of equal opportunity and protection to nongays. Get off your fat, happy asses, Gay, Inc., your work is not done.

“The Huffington Post,” June 3, 2010:

“Pelosi said the House WEAKENED ITS REPEAL LANGUAGE TO MOLLIFY THE WHITE HOUSE. …Military leaders REFUSED TO ACCEPT LANGUAGE THAT WOULD BAR DISCRIMINATION, so the clause was dropped.”

I'm glad DADT was repealed and the Matthew Sheppard Hate Crimes Law was passed, but really, Obama and the Dems dropped the ball on LGBT issues over the last two years. I know the damn GOP was always in the way, but they could have passed a lot more of our bills if they had just given them the time of day. For example, they should have passed ENDA and the Domestic Partnership Benefits & Obligations Act. The former never even got a committee vote, and the latter passed out of committees in both chambers never to be given a floor vote. So frustrating!!! And now with the Republicans running the House its going to be a really unproductive two years. Looks like its time to head back to the courts to advance equality, and Obama, please stop appealing all of the Pro-LGBT court rulings!
