I agree with Mr. Zumwalt. A march for LGBT equality in 2012, on the heels of an election, would be a total waste of resources. The sad truth is that only a handful of the people that attend these marches contact their Senators and representatives on a reguar basis about legislation. The energy would be much better spent in registering progressives to vote. Nothing is going to change overnight and sometimes these marches direct anger in the wrong place. We have a President who is very supportive (enough that he's not enforcing DOMA) and a lot of progressive Democrats in Congress. It is true that we have a few not-so-supportive Blue Dog Democrats, but it would be disasterous for LGBTs if President Obama is not reelected, we lose the Senate, or we fail to recapture the House. Any one of those scenarios sets us back and all three would be catastrophic. Instead of marching and criticizing the wrong people (because as the author explains, we're not changing Sen. Graham's mind), we ought to register people to vote and push them to build relationships with their elected representatives. And doing some community outreach in states with LGBT-rights legislation pending wouldn't hurt either.
