Jennifer Holliday needs to take a seat on this one. It was perfectly appropriate for Jennifer Hudson to mention Florence Ballard at the Golden Globes. You have to be blind not to see that Dreamgirls is not-so-loosely based on the Supremes. It's obvious.

And for her to question Mary Wilson, who was IN THE SUPREMES is ridiculous.

Sorry Holliday, YOU'RE wrong.

In its original incarnation, Effie Melody White dies in poverty, as did Florence Ballard Chapman. From the Dreamettes to the Dreams to Deena Jones & the Dreams mimicks the evolution of the Primettes to the Supremes to Diana Ross & the Supremes. "Effie" as in "F" as in "Florence." "Melody" as in "ballad," which is close to "Ballard." In both groups, the strongest vocalist is removed from the position of lead singer to highlight their weakest but more alluring vocalist (Deena/Diana) who also happen to be their record label's paramour. While DRATS didn't steal any of Flo's solo material, Motown founder/owner was said to have squashed what was to have been her solo debut.

And if the story had nothing to do with DRATS and Motown, then Motown would never have attempted to prevent the show from opening on Broadway.

If "Dreamgirls" isn't about the Supremes, then it was certainly influenced by them more than by any other act; and it certainly isn't "uninfluenced."
