I read some of your story on coming out.

It is a hard life for one that lives behind a mask living opposite

It's like looking at a shop window with so many things in it that one loves: but cannot manage to handle them

I call myself Gerry bye and be greatfull

I am a fat, middle-aged white man, but I was once a young, attractive white man. I have been attracted to black men since I was in my teens. Unfortunately, back then in the 60's and 70's it was very dangerous to announce that you're gay. I dated black men some older and some younger than me, but only in the past 2 years have I found the one I want to share the rest of my life with. He's younger than I, but is a fat, middle-aged black man.

When people put a face to their discrimination--a person who suffers from their bigotry--they may be less inclined to vote away gay rights. It's easy to deny a group of people their rights when you don't know any member of that group.

So sad that you don't get it after all these years about the importance of coming out. "No one tells anyone their straight"??? I don't recall that being the case and have a drawer full of family and college classmates' wedding invitations and baby announcements that says otherwise. I am reminded of one of the most eminent professors (now dead) at the University of Chicago - a right-winger who was one of the biggest "chicken hawks" I know of and a very sad, sad man who never achieved any happiness in a relationship. This guy whom I'll just call "Professor Alfred Bl__m" (who wrote a book that most of us have heard of that changed the course of higher education in this country told me about 25 years ago that he opposed gay rights laws because "Civil Rights for gays would just take all the fun out of sneaking around in the dark." The sadness of people who felt they had to live like that is why I believe coming out is important, for society and for an individual's own sanity.

Anthony Cotton is an attractive young man. He reminds me of the actor James Franco. I would give anything to be in my twenties again. I would ask Anthony Cotton out on a date, but being that I'm a black male, he mostly likely would be interested. Why are hot young attractive white gay males aren't interested in attractive black males? I only get looks from old fat middle aged white males. LOL

I go way back in the gay community and I still don't "get it" as to why it's important to come out. It's no one's business what my or your sexuality is. No one tells anyone they're straight; why should we tell other people we're gay? I'm myself, and I don't need to make statements. Period.
