I think Jarrett Barrios is a really nice and smart guy. The problem that Jarrett may have had is the same as many other elected officials who then go on to run non-profits. They sometimes forget that every move is monitored by the Board and that you no longer speak for yourself but for an organization. It is often infinitely more difficult than being a politician in elected office.

My gosh, GLAAD Directors: We all make mistakes – like in Board oversight. Please let us know why there is all of this talk of suspect links between a board member and a Co-Chair, and why the other Co-Chair has been absent. I love GLAAD but tossing Jarrett overboard! People are talking. And I fear that a critical organization is going to suffer scapegoats and egos. I hope that I am wrong.

In Texas they have a saying which roughly goes, “That cowboy is all hat, and no cattle”.
Jarret Barrios was a charming kid but he was never as smart as he likes to think he is. The boyfriend, Doug Hattaway, is even worse, blowing smoke up his own a** and stirring the pot so he can keep himself in billable hours. They can’t get back to Cambridge fast enough. Definitely not ready for prime time.

Having known Jarrett Barrios for more than 20 years, I feel very comfortable in writing that I have never known a more dedicated, honest, ethical public servant. GLAAD and our community will miss Jarrett’s leadership and vision more than most can understand. Unfortunately, our community throws people under the bus quite easily, which stops many talented leaders from emerging from our community.

National gay groups will do anything to have a non-white (and preferably non-male) leader. In a community where gay white men donate the money, volunteer, and staff the frontlines, this guy was selected for his race. Not competence. Same story over and over at gay groups.
