An Afro-American Republican is about as logical as Jews for Jesus. When the Republican party has been using race baiting to build their base in the south since the 1960s, how can anyone of color call themselves a Republican unless they hate their own race. The party of Jesse Helms, Strong Thurmond, Barbour and other race baiters led their party’s gay hate agenda as well.

Just because you are gay doesn’t mean you are not bigoted. That I will agree with and have witnessed throughout the US. But a Republican can’t point the finger, esp. when race baiting is part of their national strategy to win votes.

Robert, thanks much for your piece. For once, I could identify with the entire theme of an article. As a life-long Republican (aging white) I’ve routinely been derided by fellow gay and lesbian acquaintances and others as self-loathing, outside the mainstream, weird, and even dismissed as a loon for espousing and voting my GOP-centric beliefs. These include liberty for all, limited government, judges who rule on law and not make it, free enterprise, law and order, equality of opportunity, strong national defense, support for the truly needy, Constitutional rights, and, most of all, individual responsibility.

I’ve never understand how anyone could verbally and/or in writing attack anyone for believing in these types of values. To me, they’re what America is all about, and what makes us unique as a people. And, I’m proud to see minorities (and especially gay ones) feeling likewise.

By the way, I’m an average Joe, a man who goes to work everyday just like everybody else, a man who is concerned about our Nation’s future, and a returned peace corps volunteer. But most of all, I’m an American and darned proud of it.

You know, we all might get along better and have a better chance of solving the questions facing our country if both sides stopped pretending that we knew that the other side believes.
