Anti-gay AFTAH tax-exempt status yanked

By on August 1, 2011

Despite long being labeled a Southern Poverty Law Center certified ‘Hate Group,’ Illinois-based Americans for the Truth About Homosexuality has maintained its tax-free non-profit status since 2006, and its President, Peter LaBarbera, has continued to bill himself as a credible source to media outlets on LGBT issues.

However, as of June 10, 2011, no donations to the organization will be considered tax-exempt as the group has lost its requisite 501(c)3 status after “failure to file a Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF for 3 consecutive years,” according to LGBT blog and watchdog group, ExGayWatch.

LaBarbera, who last week decried the confirmation of openly gay judge J. Paul Oetken to the Federal bench because he believes gay judges will work to “undermine” religious liberties, has long been at odds with LGBT causes from marriage rights and employment discrimination to safe-schools legislation. LaBarbera — the organization’s founder and one of the only employees — had already removed the “tax exempt” information from the website.

ExGayWatch obtained the IRS letter, which can be located here.
