Alternative music always had queer elements.

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers were gay friendly and starred in the ground breaking “My Own Private Idaho” in 1991. Bob Mould had a band called Sugar which was big on campuses. In addition, Morrissey put out his best stuff in the early 90′s. A song like “Seasick, yet still docked” really would speak to a gay kid.

Also, Rufus Wainwright’s first came out in 1998 and was all over TV in that Gap ad.
