The work the Mattachine Society in Washington, DC was, perhaps, one of the most influential and creative collaborations of Lesbian and Gay men in Gay Rights history. While many in our community today enjoy freedom of expression of their sexuality in life, we must not forget the risks these people took, at a time when being who you were could get you legally incarcerated.
I was fortunate and proud to meet several of these individuals, and the experience is still profoundly memorable. I will never take the life I have as a "given" and remember how important it is to continue to be the best person (truly a Gay Blade) I can be. My respect for how challenging it was for them to be "out" speaks to the influence they had on others, especially in Washington, DC. It is a debt we owe to all of these courageous, industrious and wonderful people. We truly can be proud, out and Gay because of them, and grateful they believed in themselves and others.
Thank you.
