His views on LGBT issues aside, Herman Cain really had no choice but to drop out of the Republican presidential contest after Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White revealed that she had a 13-year affair with Cain that ended only weeks before he launched his run for the White House.

White chose Fox News to go public (Actually, Fox's Atlanta affiliate, WAGA-TV) -- fully aware that Fox was the favorite news network among Republicans and conservatives in general -- and she produced documentary evidence of their affair in the form of records of Cain's telephone calls and text messages to White.

Fully aware that the revelation of his extramarital affair with White would cost him the support of hard-line social conservatives in the GOP left Cain with no alternative but to bring his campaign to a halt.

As far as I'm concerned, there's only one candidate in the race for the GOP presidential nomination who is truly electable: Jon huntsman. But, unfortunately for him, Republican voters are refusing to even consider his candidacy. Why? Because he's too moderate for their taste -- and because he served as the U.S. Ambassador to China under President Obama (Never mind the fact that he was appointed by President George W. Bush).

All this shows how far outside the American political mainstream the Republican Party has veered in the last 10 years -- and especially since Obama won the White House. Today's GOP is as far to the Right as the Democrats were to the Left nearly 40 years ago when George McGovern was their 1972 presidential nominee.

Those who fail to learn from history . . .
