As a transgender person, I think this is tricky. We are also assuming that "he" works bc of who manning was or was not "out to." if you asked my family, some of them would not know what I prefer. But I'd be pretty devastated to be assumed something I'm not, just bc it's what I "was." assuming manning isn't trans or does identify as male, seems just as problematic as assuming manning is trans or identifies as female. Has the campaign asked manning what is preferred in terms of identity and what the public uses? I am not saying manning should be referred to as female, I am just wondering if there are recent statements from manning asking to be referred to as one or the other. I would imagine that it'd be difficult to come out to family, friends, the public through a campaign while incarcerated. Manning can't even witness people's reactions. And it is scary to not know how a parent or friend would react. So, has manning said identify to them as "he?" or did manning just not respond negatively to post cards and images for the campaign? Would it be more respectful, if we are unknowing and basing most information off broad statements and responses to say "they" and "manning?"

What on earth are you talking about? No one's "pulling transgender people" into *anything.* It's not about whether or not someone who is trans* can kill and oppress just as well as a cis* member of the U.S. military. This is about how someone identifies -- and there's a lot of reason to suggest that Manning is not cisgender.

Question for the author: Those letters Manning has written. Where they reviewed by people who would have further "reason" to taunt zie if they saw zie identify as something other than male/Bradley in them?

babs, i don't think the author was trying to drag transgender people into the bradley manning affair. i think the author's stated purpose was to discuss why they have chosen to keep referring to bradley as such and with male pronouns, despite some ambiguity as to pfc manning's gender identity. chill out

Don't pull transgender people into the Bradley Manning affair. I know many transgender people who have served in the US Military, have served well and even one recently who had begun her transition while receiving commendations and a medal for valor.

Let Bradley Manning's actions and stand up for what they are, for better or for worse! If he is a hero, so be it. If he is a traitor , so be it. If he is something in between ... so be it. His sexual orientation and/or gender identity seem to be irrelevant.
