Jim Parsons, known for playing the comically automatous genius Sheldon on CBS’s hit series ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ has come out as gay in a New York Times profile showcasing his starring role of Broadway’s revival of ‘Harvey.’

Though rumors have circled around the tall, gangly actor for years — including reports he’d gotten engaged to his long-time boyfriend in 2010 — the actor is only now publicly acknowledging his orientation in the media, in a paragraph mentioning his performance as Tommy Boatwright in last year’s broadway production of Larry Kramer’s ‘The Normal Heart.’

“‘The Normal Heart’ resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said.”

Didn’t he acknowledge his male partner, who had accompanied him on the red carpet, by name when he won his Emmy?

Who cares? He is a fantastic actor; great sense of timing for comedy and we all love him as Sheldon. Makes NO difference if gay or straight. People are people and should be appreciated for being themselves.

Shocked, I tell you. I am shocked.
I didn’t realize he was in the closet.

His biography on Wikipedia, which I read several weeks ago, stated that he had cancelled plans to marry his boyfriend, so this interview was certainly no surprise to me. Now that he’s come out, maybe his character, Sheldon, will also come out. The program is, in my opinion, the best on the air.
