Biden praises LGBT Americans in P-Town

By on August 30, 2012

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — Vice President Joe Biden told a crowd gathered at a Provincetown, Mass. campaign stop that LGBT Americans are “freeing the souls of the American People.”

Biden, who visited the prominent gay resort town and spoke at the base of the Pilgrim Monument and Museum, also said that gay activists aren’t just fighting for their own civil rights, but also the “civil rights of every straight American,” reported Politico.

Politico also noted that the vice president’s own first public statement of support for same-sex marriage this spring directly influenced President Obama to come out in support for extending marriage rights to same-sex couples several days later, and may have played a role in the inclusion of support for same-sex marriage rights in the 2012 Democratic platform.
