James C. “Chip” DiPaula, Jr., who worked as campaign manager and chief of staff to former Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. from 2005-2007, has joined the ranks of those supporting marriage equality in Maryland. DiPaula, who is gay and was regarded as Ehrlich’s closest aide, issued a fundraising appeal on behalf of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, the coalition that is defending the Civil Marriage Protection Act in a referendum in November.

In the e-mail to supporters on Aug. 29, DiPaula wrote: “As a lifelong Marylander, it was a great honor to serve [Ehrlich] and the citizens of the state I love… I am not alone among Republicans in my support for marriage equality. Former Vice President Dick Cheney and former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman do, too.”
