MADISON, Wis. — The U.S. Senate campaign for Tammy Baldwin released the results of an internal poll conducted recently that show the Wisconsin congresswoman in a slight lead over the state’s former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson.

According to The National Review the campaign reports that Baldwin leads Thompson 50 percent to 45 percent, with an additional 5 percent of voters undecided. The lead, however, falls within the poll’s margin of error.

Recently, Thompson staffers have come under fire for using anti-gay tactics to attack Baldwin, the only openly lesbian member of the U.S. House. Notably, a Thompson staffer emailed to media outlets a video of Baldwin at Madison LGBT Pride, with a comment reading “Clearly, there’s no one better positioned to talk ‘heartland values’ than Tammy.”
