Well-said, Mr. Owens, very well-said! You're right--there does seem to be, in the white gay community, this fascination with homophobia within the African-American community, as if African-Americans are solely, or even primarily, responsible for the denial of rights to the LGBTQ community. I would suggest that these gays who are so concerned with what black folks are doing poke around in their own houses and find out just where their family and friends REALLY stand because the fact is, just because Mommy and Daddy have your partner over to family functions, or just because your good-girlfriends like to hang out in gay bars with you, that does not mean that they support gay equality (e.g., gay marriage) without qualification. I hope they aren't still trying to blame the African-American community for the passage of Proposition 8.

Recent polls have demonstrated that a growing number of blacks support gay marriage. Polls conducted after Obama's announcement reported that this support was roughly 59 percent.

This is yet another effort to simply malign the black community as the last bastion of homophobia in the U.S., or further the belief that we are somehow more homophobic than other races. It is telling that you chose not to highlight the group of black ministers that have come out in support of Obama and marriage equality. You also chose to ignore prominent black politicians and activists that support gay marriage (Cory Booker, Julian Bond, Cornel West, Erik Michael Dyson).

You also failed to acknowledge that there is concern that Obama supporters of all races may stay home on Election Day due to a lack of enthusiasm and excitement among the base. According to you, If blacks don't turn out in large numbers, it's because we're homophobes. It couldn't possibly be due to disappointment with the President's administration (and its failure to address rampant unemployment in the black community). That's as ridiculous as suggesting that any and all whites that don't vote for Obama are racist.
