In this instance, purportedly there was a physical altercation, which occurred after Furr had brandished his weapon. I believe it was ill advised for those individuals to follow his car, because the man was obviously not stable. However, they did follow the car. It was my understanding that they had reported the weapon incident to the police, and were attempting to assist in his capture. In any event, according to the US Attorney press release, Furr parked his car, got out of his car, and opened fire at the vehicle as it was going down the street. This does not qualify as self defense. Any person in fear would have driven away and called for police assistance. Furr got out of his car, fired on the vehicle until it crashed, and continued to fire afterwards. There was no attempt to arrest, or seek back-up. There were no weapons in the car or on the person of the victims. These facts support an assault with intent to kill, as well as an assault with a deadly weapon.

In spite of the self congratulatory remarks provided by the US Attorney, I can only conclude that this trial has concluded as a miscarriage of justice. The fact that Furr was released from custody pending sentencing does not bode well. I fear that in the near future an extremely unstable and dangerous man will be walking the streets of the District as a free man. Frankly, I don't believe we will be fortunate enough never to hear from him again.
