The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association bestowed its inaugural Randy Shilts Award for LGBT Coverage on NPR’s Michel Martin at an event this week. Martin hosts the “Tell Me More” program on NPR and has covered LGBT rights issues extensively on the show. The award is named for Shilts, who is credited with being the first to cover the “gay beat” for a major metropolitan newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle.
