IF the SCOTUS decides in an impartial manner same-sex marriage will certainly become legal throughout the U.S. But if the judges split this according to their perspective ideological viewpoints, Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito will vote conservatively while the remainder vote in favor of same-sex marriage. The odds are in favor of same-sex marriage!

I think DOMA will go away. That one is pretty easy. They added the Article III question and I think that's what will throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing. I see that question as the conservative way out. If they rule that the backers of Prop 8 don't have standing to defend the law, then they don't have to answer the question of marriage equality for the whole country.

I don't think I'm overstating this, this is the biggest legal decision of my lifetime. I'm super nervous. This decision will define a certain period in our history where we either do what we've always done (though slowly at times) and we move forward towards greater equality. Or we take a massive, tragic, unforgivable step backwards and take ourselves closer to the brink of some dark unknowable future conflict.
