NEW YORK — The Foundation for New Jersey-based Merck Pharmaceuticals is joining Intel and UPS in cutting funding for the Boy Scouts of America over a controversial anti-gay policy.

In July, the Scouts reaffirmed its ban on openly gay and lesbian Americans participating in the Scouts or acting as Scout leaders or den mothers. The outcry after the announcement prompted strong criticism from across the political spectrum, including from then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
