The president has decided, so now we stand at the water's edge of our country.

Since George Washington, Americans have been electing Commanders-in-Chief to provide for the common defense. That is a solemn constitutional duty, of course. But really, it is any government's first function.

We do not elect a president's individual national security team members. Nor should we burden national security team members with the fluctuating passions of politics, partisan or otherwise.

Absent reasons of a very high order for any given nominee's disqualification, it is our president's right and duty to command the national security team of his or her choosing. President Obama has now designated his Secretary of Defense. Accordingly, the 'friendly fire' of all American critics should cease.

A rigorous U.S. Senate confirmation process will insure our tradition of much-needed checks and balances. But that process should be as respectful to each nominee as the gravity of the mission each position demands.

We should especially wish President Obama and Secretary of Defense Designate Hagel every success in their critical missions for our country's defense.

I do hope that Secretary Designate Hagel will make the time and effort to assure LGB service members, in word and deed, of his commitment to their equality and that of their LGBT families, loved ones and survivors.

Ingrained, historical prejudice does not end overnight. It is never too late, nor too impolitic, for our civilian commanders to find meaningful ways to boost force morale and honor the dignity and sacrifice of all.

How come the Log Cabin Republicans will give Romney a break and not Hegel? Tammy Baldwin has the right idea. See if the guy is actually homophobic or just normally predjudiced in a way he can overcome. Then if he passes that test see if he passes other qualification tests.

NO MATTER HOW OFTEN tireless Administration Shill Valerie Jarrett coos that "The President is fully committed to ensuring that all of our service members and military families are treated equally"—no matter how many times he claims it himself—INaction speaks louder than proverbial words. THE undisputed FACT is that he has REFUSED FOR TWO YEARS to order the Pentagon to do just that DESPITE having been urged to by HRC in January 2011, despite SLDN having REPEATEDLY done the same since February 2011. When the Commander-in-Chief didn't order current Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to make it happen, WHY should we believe that he'll require Hagel [regardless of whether or not HE's changed] to do anything different? WHEN are our paid advocates going to SERIOUSLY put pressure on the President to FULFILL this promise? [And, PLEASE stop simply repeating the Pentagon's BIG LIE about still "studying" benefit issues when their November 2010 report admitted that they had already done that at length, AND even made suggests for how to change such as making any benefits not banned by DOMA "member designated" the way life insurance was even before repeal. Thank you.]
