Laurie, why don’t you go down South? You just might be pleasantly surprised.

If your advice applied to Greenwich Village 44 years ago, LGBT New Yorkers would have fled the Big Apple of Mayor Lindsay and his chronic, homophobic police raids. Would we have had Stonewall?

People live where they live. And they are entitled to their fundamental human rights WHERE and WHEN they live. All kinds of Americans have been struggling on behalf of that common principle– in rural home towns and cities, alike– since the birth of our nation.

It’s good to see them going out and getting involved but they have plenty of work to do in their home states. Turn around, go home and hit your home state hard.

I’m sorry but living in the states that deny your most basic rights, marriage equality, is endorsing those states views. Yes, endorsing those states views by paying those states money through taxation. No L.G.B.T. person should pay a dime to any state that uses its budget to deny the L.G.B.T. community it’s basic rights.

The only thing these redneck, regressive southern states deserve is a package from Ted Kaczynski.

What should be obvious to all is that there is nothing ‘second class’ about these LGBT Southerners. They are the South’s new patriots.

In fact, they are changing hearts and minds rapidly– all across the South, even as we write about it. For those of us with ties to both DC and the South, we could not be prouder of them.

And thanks to the Blade for covering this important story.
