Sixth Florida county passes DP registry

TAMPA — Pinellas County became the sixth county in Florida to approve a domestic partner registry, though the rights afforded couples through that registry are not recognized in much of the rest of the state.
“This has no legal merit,” Commissioner Norm Roche told the Tampa Bay Times, adding that if a couple has a medical emergency in a county that does not recognize partnerships, they’re out of luck.
Still, the law will grant registered couples the right to visit one another in hospitals, make medical decisions for one another and possibly share health insurance coverage, if the contract is recognized by employers.
