NEW YORK — The American Academy of Pediatrics came out in support of same-sex marriage last week stating that allowing gay and lesbian parents to marry if they choose is in the best interests of their children, the New York Times and other media outlets reported.
The academy’s new policy statement says marriage helps guarantee rights, benefits and long-term security for children. Academy staff began reviewing scientific literature about four years ago to write its 10-page report backed by 60 citations, the Times reported.
One doctor, Ellen Perrin, who co-authored the policy paper, cited studies with different design and samples that had similar results. Others, such as professors at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, said the policy from the academy was premature and that there’s not enough national data to support the new policy.
