EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.—The Minnesota Vikings on Monday officially cut punter Chris Kluwe from their roster.

Kluwe, who played for the team since 2005, publicly backed same-sex marriage last fall. Minnesota Public Radio on Tuesday reported Kluwe said he was unsure whether his advocacy played a role in the Vikings’ decision to release him.

The team stressed his performance and salary — and not his marriage activism — were  contributing factors.
