NEW YORK — The New York Department of Health and doctors from Weill Cornell Medical College are warning those planning to visit New York for Pride to seek out advice concerning the meningitis vaccine before coming.

According to NBC News, of 22 cases reported of men who have sex with men contracting meningitis, 7 have died, which is far higher than the national average of 10 percent of cases that result in death.

Health officials are recommending visitors to New York take necessary precautions to reduce their risk of infection.

“It would be reasonable for people traveling to New York City and participating in the events to talk to their doctors about whether or not they might benefit from vaccinations,” said Dr. Jay Varma, deputy commissioner for disease control in the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
