Mike Preston, a longtime beat writer and columnist for the Baltimore Sun who mainly covers the Baltimore Ravens, is being criticized for a controversial tweet he sent that targeted former Ravens player and gay rights advocate Brendon Ayanbadejo.

The Baltimore City Paper reported on Oct. 30 that in response to a recent Sun story about Ayanbadejo’s work as an advocate for gay rights in sports, Preston tweeted, “Hopefully, we have seen the end of the Brendon Ayanbedejo [sic] stories and his crusade. Enough already. Actually, way too much.”  The tweet is no longer showing on Preston’s Twitter account.

A City Paper columnist called for the Sun to fire Preston for his “homophobic” remarks. Another unidentified author on the City Paper site wrote, “As if LGBT rights are tiresome and homophobia in sports is no longer an issue. Fuck him. The Sun needs to fire this insufferable blowhard.”

Preston did not immediately respond to the Blade’s request for comment.
