NEW YORK—A New York City man faces a second-degree assault charge for allegedly attacking an award-winning gay journalist earlier this month.

The New York Daily News reported the New York Police Department took Leighton Jennings, 24, into custody on Jan. 28.

The newspaper cited NYPD sources who said Jennings attacked Randy Gener, 46, on Seventh Avenue near West 54th Street in Midtown Manhattan early Jan. 17 as he walked home from a party. Gener remains at a local hospital after undergoing brain surgery.

Gener’s sister, Jessica Blair-Driessler, was among the more than 70 people who attended a Jan. 26 candlelight vigil near the intersection at which Jennings allegedly attacked Gener.

“He’d been struggling for work,” said Blair-Driessler, according to Gay City News. “On top of that, his mother died last year. The guy just can’t get a break. That’s what I was thinking.”

A fund to help Gener pay his medical bills has raised nearly $50,000.
