TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The first openly gay person elected to the Florida Legislature will hold a leadership position within the state House of Representatives.

House Democratic Leader Mark Pafford (D-Palm Beach) and Democratic Leader Pro Tempore Mia Jones (D-Jacksonville) on Dec. 1 selected state Rep. David Richardson (D-Miami Beach) to serve as the Democratic floor leader in the 2014-2016 legislative session.

“I’m proud to have David as part of a talented and determined team,” said Pafford in a press release. “We’re a diverse group — that’s always an important part of our strength as Democrats — and we’re going to work hard for common Democratic values of justice, equality and opportunity.”

Voters first elected Richardson in August 2012.

The Miami Beach accountant who represents House District 113 won re-election in July after the Florida Division of Elections disqualified his Republican opponent.

“I did not run for office to make history, but instead to make a difference,” said Richardson.
