Gay Florida couples urged to enroll

Health benefits are being extended to spouses as the first gay Florida couples marry.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida is extending retirement and health insurance benefits to the spouses of gay and lesbian public employees just as the state began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.

The Florida Department of Management Services issued memos Jan. 6 (the same day most clerks in the state began issuing licenses) that said married same-sex couples now have a “qualifying status change” and can enroll in the family health plan and become beneficiaries of their spouse’s retirement benefits, the Democrat article said.

In some cases, the change is expected to save couples with health issues thousands of dollars in care, the article said.
