Vice President Joe Biden officiated a same-sex ceremony for two White House staffers at his home on Monday afternoon.
According to a statement sent to BuzzFeed News, the vice president obtained a temporary certification from D.C. to perform the ceremony for Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie who both asked him to officiate. Mosteller is the director of Oval Office operations and special assistant to President Barack Obama. Mahshie is a trip coordinator for Michelle Obama.
This was the first wedding Biden had ever performed.
“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys,” Biden tweeted along with a photo of the small ceremony that was attended by close friends.
Jill Biden gave her social media blessing by tweeting “Love is love!”
