BOSTON — A new guide is available from the Fenway Institute and the Center for American Progress that details how the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) will impact health issues for LGBT Americans, the Rainbow Times, a gay New England paper, and other sources report.

Officials say “Optimizing LGBT Health Under the Affordable Care Act: Strategies for Health Centers” will offer a “critical step toward addressing … disparities and improving the health of LGBT Americans,” according to Dr. Harvey Makadon, director of the National LGBT Health Education Center.

The report addresses several areas including data collection, nondiscrimination protections, prevention and wellness, insurance market reforms and new coverage options as ways in which the Act can positively impact LGBT health.

It outlines strategies such as health centers offering free or low-cost services promoted in LGBT media and community groups such as HIV testing and counseling services, smoking cessation classes, hormone therapy and mammography.
