PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers University on Wednesday fired its men’s basketball coach after ESPN aired portions of a video that shows him using anti-gay slurs against his players.

The 40-minute clip the network aired on Tuesday shows Mike Rice calling his players a “fucking fairy” and a “fucking faggot” during practice. The video also shows him throwing basketballs at their heads and pushing them.

Rutgers suspended Rice last December for three games and fined him $50,000. The Star-Ledger reported athletic director Tim Pernetti said the gay slur was “at the core of the suspension.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the Human Rights Campaign are among those who criticized Rice’s comments.
