Actress Tessa Thompson has publicly spoken about her sexuality and her relationship with Janelle Monáe in an interview with Net-A-Porter.
“Janelle and I love each other deeply. We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, it doesn’t bother me,” Thompson, 34, says of their relationship.
Thompson appeared in Monáe’s music film “Dirty Computer,” which included queer themes. She also portrayed Monáe’s love interest for the song “Make Me Feel.”
“It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence,” Thompson says.
The “Westworld” star also confirmed that she is attracted to both men and women. She says her family is accepting of her sexuality.
“I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion,” Thompson says. “That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved one, but so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
Thompson also stars in “Thor: Ragnarok” as Valkyrie, a character Thompson has said is bisexual.
Monáe came out as pansexual back in April.
The LGBTQ organization Lambda Legal held its annual “Lambda Legal in the Pines” fundraiser on Saturday, July 25. The event was held at a house on Fire Island featured in Ryan Murphy’s 2014 HBO film, “The Normal Heart.”
Organizers say over $500,000 was raised to support Lambda Legal’s national litigation and advocacy work.
