LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan member of the Republican National Committee drew criticism last week after saying gays want free health care because they’re dying of AIDS, LGBTQ Nation reports.
Dave Agema made the comments while speaking Dec. 5 at the Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception according to Equality Michigan.
In a speech against same-sex marriage, Agema said during his time with American Airlines, he saw LGBT employees claim someone with AIDS as their partner simply to get medical benefits, LGBTQ Nation reports.
“They want free medical because they’re dying between 30 and 44 years old,” he was quoted as having said. “To me, it’s a moral issue. It’s a biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and it’s in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong.”
Equality Michigan has called on Republican leaders to denounce Agema’s remarks and have him removed as a committee member of the party, LGBTQ Nation reports.
“It is unconscionable that in 2013 a political figure in a prominent position would feel so comfortable spewing lies about real people in a pathetic attempt to deny fundamental rights to families in Michigan,” said Equality Michigan’s Emily Dievendorf.
