LINCOLN, Neb. — A fire destroyed a gay nightclub in Nebraska’s capital city on Jan. 31.
The Lincoln Journal Star reported a fire broke out at the Karma Nightclub and Cabaret in downtown Lincoln shortly around 7:15 p.m. The newspaper said the blaze that grew to four alarms gutted the building and caused its roof to collapse.
Two people were inside the building when the fire began, but they were able to escape uninjured.
“There’s just an overwhelming sadness,” Tami Harris-Belt, a longtime patron of the club, told the Lincoln Journal Star. “I want to use the word ‘grief’ even though no one was hurt. I want to have a memorial for the building. It’s a loss that feels comparable to death.”
Reports indicate Karma Nightclub and Cabaret was the largest gay nightclub in Nebraska.
