The Club Hippo, a mainstay of Baltimore’s LGBT community for 43 years, has announced its closing dates. The last night for the dance club portion of the bar will be Saturday, Sept. 26 while the last drag show will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27. The last night for the Saloon and Karaoke bars will be Saturday, Oct. 3.
The following statement was posted on the Hippo’s Facebook page:
“From all of us at The Hippo….the closing dates are at hand. We would like to thank each and every one of you who has visited and supported us for 43 years. We hope to see many of you in these last final weeks ahead. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
The Hippo announced its closing in May to coincide with the retirement of its owner Chuck Bowers. Bowers will continue to own the building but it will be converted into a CVS drugstore.
Members of Baltimore’s LGBT community knew of the eventual closing scheduled for later this year but some expressed surprise and disappointment that it was taking place this soon.
“Well that was abrupt,” said Paul Hummel, a one-time employee at the Hippo. “I’m hoping I can come by one last time, but this didn’t leave a lot of notice. Such a bummer.”
Bowers declined to discuss the reason for the sooner-than-expected closing.
