Maryland state Sen. Rich Madaleno (D-Montgomery County) on Wednesday released an ad that features him kissing his husband.
“What’s the number one way that I will piss of Donald Trump and the Republicans,” asks Madaleno before he kisses Mark Hodge on the steps of their home in Kensington. “Take that Trump.”
The LGBTQ Victory Fund in a press release said the ad — which also features Madaleno’s two children — “is the first political ad in American history to feature a kiss between a candidate and a same-sex spouse.”
“At a time when the White House and other anti-LGBTQ politicians are attempting to erase our visibility and rollback our rights, Rich Madaleno is boldly stating he’s proud of his family and will fight for all Marylanders if elected,” said Victory Fund CEO Annise Parker. “Not long ago, out LGBTQ people were unable to run for statewide offices such as governor, but voters now recognize there is an authenticity to LGBTQ leaders rarely found in today’s politicians.”
Madaleno is among the Democrats who are running for Maryland governor.
The Democratic primary is on June 26. Madaleno could become the country’s first openly gay governor if he were to defeat Republican Gov. Larry Hogan in November.
