A law that allows Maryland residents to obtain a gender-neutral state ID took effect on Tuesday.

The Maryland General Assembly approved the law earlier this year. It took effect without Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s signature.

D.C. is among the other U.S. jurisdictions that provide gender-neutral IDs.
