Ladies' networking event returns next week

Women’s Wednesdays to be held at CommonWealth Gastropub

At some LGBT events, it feels like the room is full of nothing but men. That can leave some women with a less-than-welcome feeling so Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CAGLCC) created Women’s Wednesdays.

The brainchild of Eileen Kessler, president of OmniStudios, and her talented team on the Women and Diversity Committee, Women’s Wednesdays will cater exclusively to the busy female professional, giving her the opportunity to network with other like-minded, similarly positioned professionals.

When CAGLCC tried this concept in 2009, a wine tasting at Best Cellars in Dupont Circle, dozens of women in business thronged and found a new place to meet. The kickoff event in 2010 is set to be even more successful. Slated for Wednesday at CommonWealth Gastropub in Columbia Heights at 6:30 p.m., this CAGLCC networking event is for women only.

Recessionary times create hardships for many and opportunity for others. McCabe Russell PA, founded in October in the thick of the current economic downturn, is the product of the talents of Heather McCabe and Emily Russell. Their professional practice focuses on Progressive Family Law.

“We represent mothers, fathers, grandparents, third parties and children,” Russell says. “Whether you are married, partnered, or single, and whether you are beginning your family or re-structuring it through dissolution or divorce, our priority is the creation and security of your unique family.”

Life experiences are often cited as the source of inspiration for authors, but in their case, McCabe and Russell draw strength and motivation from their skills as both spouses and mothers of four, as their job often requires counseling clients during very emotional times.

“We have a lot of empathy for our clients,” McCabe says. “It is very rewarding to know you’ve helped someone through such a difficult time.”

Family law attorneys must possess the skills of a litigator and negotiator. An understanding of accounting and financial matters is essential to guide clients and present financial issues to the court. People skills are important, particularly oral communication.

“You are constantly in contact with people; whether it be your client, opposing counsel, or court personnel, there is always someone with whom you need to effectively communicate,” McCabe says. Russell nods in agreement. No doubt they make a good team; one good reason to start a business when times are tough.
