‘Call Me By Your Name’ director Luca Guadagnino wants to make a sequel

“Call Me By Your Name” hasn’t been released yet but director Luca Guadagnino is already thinking about a sequel.

According to Screen Daily, Guadagnino described his thoughts on a follow-up film during the BFI London Film Festival. One of his main reasons is because he fell in love with the cast.

“I want to do a sequel, because Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel—they are all gems,” Guadagnino says. “The texture we built together is very consistent. We created a place in which you believe in the world before them. They are young, but they are growing up.”

In the novel of the same name by André Aciman, 17-year-old Elio (Timothee Chalamet) begins a summer affair in Italy with 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer). 15 years later, Elio and Oliver meet again in the U.S., but Oliver is married with kids.

Guadagnino might change that scenario in his sequel and could also make Elio more sexually fluid.

“I don’t think Elio is necessarily going to become a gay man. He hasn’t found his place yet. I can tell you that I believe that he would start an intense relationship with Marzia [Esther Garrel’s character] again,” he says.

As for the timing of the sequel, Guadagnino shared he would want the film to be released in 2020.

“If I paired the age of Elio in the film with the age of Timothée, in three years’ time, Timothée will be 25, as would Elio by the time the second story was set,” Guadagnino says.

The actual time setting in the film would be around 1990, a time period Guadagnino would love to explore with the characters.

“It is the time of the fall of communism and the start of the new world order and the so-called ’The End of History’ that Francis Fukuyama established then. It would be the beginning of the Berlusconi era in Italy and it would mean dealing with the war of Iraq,” Guadagnino explains.

“Call Me By Your Name” hits theaters on Nov. 24.

The LGBTQ organization Lambda Legal held its annual “Lambda Legal in the Pines” fundraiser on Saturday, July 25. The event was held at a house on Fire Island featured in Ryan Murphy’s 2014 HBO film, “The Normal Heart.”

Organizers say over $500,000 was raised to support Lambda Legal’s national litigation and advocacy work.
