BOSTON —House Speaker John Boehner, a long-time opponent of LGBT rights, is in Massachusetts fundraising and campaigning for that state’s former Senate Republican leader, who is openly gay.

Richard Tisei came out of the closet in 2010 and has voiced his support for same-sex marriage, and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, positions that are at odds with the House Republican leader’s.

“While they don’t agree on every issue, Richard and the speaker respect one another, and we expect Richard will be a strong, independent voice for his Massachusetts constituents that want a new approach to help create jobs and prosperity,” Boehner campaign spokesperson Cory Fritz said in a statement, according to the Huffington Post.
