About 40 people gathered at the foot of the Washington Monument on the evening of Dec. 30 in reaction to the attack and beating of Kenni Shaw, a 30-year-old gay man, in East Baltimore on Christmas night.

Shaw was punched from behind around 9 p.m. on Christmas night as he left a liquor store at E. Hoffman and N. Rose Streets in East Baltimore. He was bloodied and sustained bruises to his face and body from the beating that ultimately lasted about 10 minutes and included five, perhaps six, men. Shaw was left lying face down on the pavement as the attack continued.

Shaw, a cosmetologist, told the Blade that he believes this was a hate crime and wants to speak out to help others in the community.

Delegate Mary Washington (D-43), the only elected official present, introduced herself to the crowd by saying, “I am your delegate. When you knock us down we multiply.”

  • Thank you for supporting my nephew. Being gay was not a chose of life he made when he was older, it is who he was always and God accepts him and love him the way he is because God gave him life and nobody has the right to judge a child of God.

  • It's sickening that we still live in a time where hate crimes perpetrated against people based on their sexual orientation go unpunished, or not dealt with legally on a level as attempted murder. In my opinion, every American individual is born with the right to live their life as they choose, as long as they don't break the Law and the law is supposed to respect; protect, and represent…EVERYONE! This cowardly attack against my cousin Kenni was nothing less than "Attempted Murder", and it should have been viewed; investigated, and judged with a conviction as such! Sentencing for these cowards should be so severe that it stands as an example of "THE PEOPLE'S VOICE" united against Hate! It will send a strong message saying that WE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF THIS, AND WE'RE NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!

  • Racial Unity stands with the victim..Who is now a hero for standing up!!
