HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.—Students at a southern California high school on Sept. 20 crowned a transgender classmate their homecoming queen.

“I’m so proud to win this not just for me, but for everyone out there and for every kid,” Cassidy Lynn Campbell said after she won the honor at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, as KNBC in Los Angeles reported. “It doesn’t matter, you can be yourself.”

Campbell, who has documented her transition in a series of YouTube videos, faced backlash on social media networks after she became homecoming queen.

“The one night that should be the happiest day for a girl, it should be so monumental and memorable,” she said in an emotional video she posted on her YouTube page in which she is wearing her crown and sash. “I can’t even enjoy it. I can’t even be happy.”
